Investigative Exercise 11 Recommendations

Children’s
Children’s literature is massive and so hard for children to know which books to read. It would be great if a library can recommend books to children and children can also communicate with the library and each other about these books using web 2.0. A good example is New York Public Library’s Children’s Books 2014: 100 tiles for reading and sharing.
children’s books 2014: 100 titles for reading and sharing: not only can children select titles according to categories (e.g., poetry, fantasy, realism etc.), they can also select titles by age range. Children and parents can participate by creating content (about children’s books 2014 or any title in the collection) in social media such as Facebook and Twitter. The use of social media is Web 2.0.

Teenagers
It would be great to use more Web 2.0 to help teenagers with their life and studies. A good example is resources for teenagers in New York Public Library.
New York Public Library also include materials, programs and resources for teenagers: Anti-Prom 2015, Summer Reading, Programs at Your Library, Teen NYPL, Stuff for the Teen Age, Teens and School, Explore Exhibitions, Audio, Video and Images, Recorded and Braille Books by Mail. Users can create content using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram. Again the use of these social media is Web 2.0. For example, Under Teen and School is HomeworkNYC Apps, in which students can get help from Facebook and iGoogle page.

Adult fiction
Adults are usually busier with the need to balance their life and work. It is thus important to allow adults to communicate with their reading (including reading of novels) easily by virtual or semi virtual book clubs.
MDIHS Library is going to offer a semi-virtual book club: adults can stay connected in the semi-virtual book club before they personally meet.
Toronto Public Library offers a virtual book club called Book Buzz. Adults can participate and create content in discussion forums in addition to the use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

Investigative Exercise 10 Evaluation

Children’s
Strathfied Library provides activities to support children. They offer Baby Bounce and Pre School Storytime. Baby Bounce is for children under 3 years old. The half-hr program consists of music, rhymes and songs. Pre School Storytime is for children 3 to 5 years old. It lasts for one hour and consists of music, rhymes, stories, dances and an aged related craft activity. The library also provides access to Encyclopedia Britannica, which include content for kids. This is primarily a portal of information to users based on Web 1.0 rather than Web 2.0. Children’s activities and literature are intended for children who may be too young to use web 2.0 to interact with other users.
In addition, the library has children literature collections, stories, fairy tales, fables, poems, novels and non fiction. Children’s literature can be in the form of picture books or chapter books. Strathfield Library’s catalogue allows users to rate and provide user reviews. User can also share ratings and reviews on social media such as facebook and twitter.

Adult Fiction
Strathfield Library has adult fiction collection. Its social catalogue allows users to rate and give reviews and share their ratings and reviews using social media such as facebook. Again, rating and reviews is the use of Web 2.0 in the library.

In addition, Strathfield Library also provides access to elibrary in which adult fiction in the form of audio book and e-book is also available.

Local studies
Strathfield Library has Local Studies Collection, a collection of historical and current resources with regards to the history, geography, heritage and current life of the Strathfield Local Government Area. These resources are in the forms of books, reports, environmental studies, maps, plans, oral histories, local newspapers, newspaper clipping files, pamphlet files, and photographs. The Local Studies Collection is mainly a reference collection in the sense that most items are not for loans. If multiple copies of an item exit, items may be available for loan from the general library collection. Senior high school students often find the Local Studies Collection useful when completing their geography and history assignments.
Strathfield Library also electronic resources such as Strathfield Council Community Profile and Strathfield Council Economic Profile. They are portals which provides information about various aspects of the Strathfield Local Government Area.
