The use of filter bubbles in google, facebook etc is problematic because they give users what they usually see and so isolate them from differing opinions. Users should be empowered to decide on the criteria on search results and news feed.

Investigative Exercise 6 Social Bookmarking

It would be great if a library can provide the service which allows users to provide reviews. Traditionally, a user will search for a book in a traditional catalogue. Then the user will go to the library, find the book in the shelf and read the book in order to find out whether the book is relevant. This is a very time consuming process. Other users’ reviews allow a user to find out whether a book is relevant or not very quickly. 

Investigative Exercise 5 : Social Networking

A library’s Facebook is not simply an information portal; it encourages people to come in and engages with them personally. Through the Facebook page, a library can publicize library events, inform users of additions to collections, provide links to articles, videos etc. The Facebook page also allows users to ask questions and provide feedback on the library’s services.

Investigative Exercise 2 Blogs

I have had a look at the blog of John Oxley Blog. One of the posts relate to Queensland Memory Awards 2015 announced by State Library of Queensland. The awards are intended to encourage excellent in research and creation of new knowledge of Queensland’s history, its untold stories in particular. What interests me most in the post is that the awareness that history does not tell itself and needs to be told by people or else it will never be known by people.
